A Hidden Secret of 60 Years: A Story of Patience and Love
- Sep 15, 2024
For 60 long and beautiful years, they had been each other's pillar of strength. A couple admired by everyone, they were the epitome of companionship and understanding. Through every storm and sunshine, they stood side by side, always appearing as a beacon of love and happiness. Friends and family often looked up to them, wishing to have a bond as strong as theirs.
But there was a secret—a small mystery that lingered quietly from the very day they got married. On their wedding day, the wife had brought a small, unassuming box from her parents’ home. As they settled into their new life together, she asked her husband for a simple, yet curious promise: "You cannot open this box, and you cannot ask me what is inside it."
Out of love and respect for his new bride, the husband agreed. True to his word, he never touched the box or questioned its contents. Their life together was full of joy, laughter, and tender moments. Years passed like the turning of pages in a book, and the box remained untouched in a quiet corner of their home.
But after six decades of a life filled with love, the wife fell ill. The doctor gave them heartbreaking news—she only had a few days left to live. Distraught and overwhelmed by the impending loss, the husband wandered through their home, touching the things that held memories of their shared journey. Every item reminded him of the moments they had cherished together—their first home, the vacations, the small joys of buying furniture as a young couple.
In his sorrowful recollection, he came across the box. That same mysterious box from 60 years ago. His heart heavy, he gently brought the box to his wife’s bedside and rested his head on her shoulder. She smiled warmly, her eyes twinkling with the same love she had always shown him, and said softly, "No problem, my love. You can open the box now."
With trembling hands, the husband opened the box. Inside, he found two carefully crafted dolls, some needles, fabric, and—quite surprisingly—currency worth 75,000. Confused but curious, he looked into his wife’s eyes, searching for an explanation.
With a soft chuckle, she began to explain. "When we got married, my grandmother gave me advice. She said, 'The success of a marriage doesn’t come from arguments or fighting with your spouse. Whenever you feel upset, don’t argue—just start a doll-making project, and soon your frustration will fade away.' So, whenever I felt hurt or upset, I made a doll instead of arguing."
The husband’s eyes welled up with tears as he realized the depth of her patience and wisdom. "In sixty years," he whispered, "you were only upset with me twice." He held her close, overwhelmed with emotion, cherishing the love that had carried them through all these years.
After a moment of silence, he asked, "But what about the money? Where did that come from?"
With a sly smile, she replied, "Oh, that’s the money I made from selling the other dolls I made over the years."
The husband couldn’t help but laugh through his tears. His wife, always so gentle, had turned her quiet frustrations into something creative and even profitable. He realized then that their love wasn’t just built on affection, but on patience, understanding, and a deep commitment to each other’s happiness.
The Lesson
This story carries a powerful message for us all. A successful marriage isn’t built on fighting over small things or letting bad moods destroy the bond between partners. Patience, or sabar, strengthens the foundation of a relationship. As Allah says in the Quran, "إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ"—"Indeed, Allah is with the patient."
May Allah grant us all patience, happiness, and success in our relationships, and may we learn to navigate life’s challenges with grace and understanding.
